A car parts maker with a penchant for selling fake parts on eBay has made millions off the internet by turning a small niche into a billion-dollar business, officials say.
CarPartsOnline.com is one of several online car parts suppliers with a reputation for scamming people who buy online, according to federal authorities.
They say the company’s business model is built on deceiving people into believing their car parts are genuine.
“They’re very good at it,” said Steve Hirsch, the director of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is investigating CarPartsOnline for allegedly selling fake or misleading parts.
“They’re pretty good at convincing people they’re going to get a better product, that they’re buying something different than what they’re purchasing.”
“They take people by surprise and then they make money on them, too,” Hirsch said.
